Tips on achieving success at MSU

By Caroline Blakeman, Assistant News Editor

For many college students, time does not work in their favor. With only four years to learn, adapt and grow, students may face feelings of panic or distress while attempting to build a successful educational experience with the little time they have.

How can the University assist students in being successful, not only during their time in attendance at Murray State, but also well into their professional careers?

After talking to multiple departments on campus, it is evident the University values preparedness and offers many services which contribute to success.

Peggy Whaley, director of the Center for Student Engagement and Success (CSES), said her department focuses on empowering students to reach their fullest potential.

“Staff are committed to the success and retention of all students through guidance support and cultivation of

their personal well-being and academic success,” she said.

CSES offers various forms of programming and outreach to assist students in building confidence, making connections and feeling a sense of belonging during their time at Murray State.

Some of these services include First-Generation Student Resources and Programming; Kentucky Online Testing for Students (KYOTE) Placement Exams; Racers Empower: Healthy Minds, Healthy Campus; Racer Focus; success coaching and tutoring. The details of these programs can be found on the University website in the Center for Student Engagement and Success tab.

Ace Ebling, advising and tutoring specialist for CSES, said an important aspect of being successful is knowing how and when to ask for assistance.

He said while tutoring helps students in an academic setting, it also teaches them skills related to asking for help.

“Recognizing you need help and then seeking assistance is a valuable skill in the workplace,” he said. “Also, being honest with difficulties you may have on a project or assignment shows growth and the want for professional development.”

The Tutoring Center offers both in-person and online sessions led by students who made a B or higher in the course they are tutoring for.

University Studies are the main focus of the Tutoring Center.

“We want to help prepare students for success in college by providing this additional support and help students recognize that University Studies courses serve a purpose in establishing a variety of skills such as effective communication, informed decision making and team work,” Ebling said.
